Osvaldo
Andreal "Karachi"
Karachi is a real street dancer. His whole family is obviously dance
crazy, including his very young children. One of his sisters is his
favorite dance partner. He has some very complex moves that require quit
a bit out of the dance partner. In fact, some of them I consider to
be 'follower unfriendly..' ;-).
Karachi taught me to dance with two partners simultaneously and also
showed me some Rueda moves. Many Rueda moves where done differently
than I was taught in Amsterdam.
And of course I had to learn some of his spaghetti moves. Karachi dances
on one, although he also knows about dancing on 2. When we went dancing
at the Carnaval, he kept insisting that I demonstrate the tricks I had
learned from him.
Gerardo
Dominico Lescay
Gerardo is another street dancer, but he has a background in the professional
folkloric dance groups. His does not use a lot of complex moves, but
he has a really smooth style: sensillo as he calls it. He is
also a bit of a clown on the dance floor.
Gerardo danced on 2, or as he called it contra tiempo. Like
the 'on 2' clan in New York, he was pretty persistent about it as well.
He dances on two to the modern Timba as well.
His partner Rachel is a professional dancer with Conjunto Folklorico
Cutumba. He showed me his basic Casino step, and it was interesting
because he walks al lot during his dancing, using every corner of the
dance area (floor is not really applicable here). He kept on telling
me to do so as well: ¡Camina!
Gerardo also gave me some Rumba lessons, and I really liked the way
he taught them. In fact, I have adopted his basic Rumba step and use
it all the time when there is a Rumba part in Salsa songs. His system
is slightly different than the other Rumba teachers I have had. Gerardo
gave an amazing Rumba performance together with Rachel on my 'farewell
party'.
